A SPECIAL BREED OF JOCKEYS

Some 16 years ago an organization was founded which recognized the value of horseback riding for physically and mentally disabled children. Freed from the confines of wheelchairs or the aid of braces, approximately 50 riders take to the saddle each Saturday during the months of September thru June and experience a form of independence rarely equaled. All of a sudden they are the ones looking down from the back of a warm animal which is a friend -- not just a clinical aid. The riders are in control which fosters their independence and self-esteem, giving them added courage to face everyday challenges.

Kiwanis Horses & Handicapped, Inc. is now one of the 475 therapeutic riding centers in the U.S. and serves both Dade and Broward Counties. As a member of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (N.A.R.H.A.) it meets all standards for providing therapeutic horseback riding to disabled individuals, primarily children.

The program is free to all participants and their families. For a child to participate they must receive permission from their attending physician. A registered physical therapist works with the riding instructor to set up achievable goals for each rider. Riders are assisted by volunteers who lead the horses and sidewalk on either side. These volunteers come from our local colleges, high schools, Kiwanis clubs, and the community at large. On average 18 volunteers are required per each class of six riders.

Kiwanis Horses and Handicapped is an independent organization which receives no regular income from any sources. Each year the organization must raise funds from Kiwanis Clubs, local businesses and service groups, and individuals for its operating capital. The costs deal primarily with the rental of the horses and the riding sites. There are also expenses for insurance, and riding equipment. Also funds are spent for intra-state equestrian competions such as Special Olympics.

Because space and resources are limited, there are more than 75 handicapped children on the waiting list to join the program.

You could help by either volunteering some of your time, or by sponsoring one child by contributing $100. All contributions are tax-deductible. Together, we can make this program more available to deserving individuals.
